Choosing a ski or snowboard goggle is not all about style

Choosing the right goggle is much more than choosing the prettiest colour or the most evil looking of design. There are a number of factors to take into account when deciding. It’s all down to choosing the right lens.

If you wear your goggles just when the weather is bad or cloudy. You need to choose one which is not a reflective or mirror lenses. This is generally a Orange or light blue tint [but can vary] These will provide as much light to come through the goggle as possible so you can see where the snow bumps, ice and other obstacles that may be in the way.

If you are just fair weather rider who only goes out when it’s a beautiful clear day and hides in the shops or bar when is snowy or over cast. You will need to choose a Lens that is Mirror lens. The sun is very strong on a ski slope, with double the power from direct sun and reflection from the snow. The Mirror lens goggles will reflect this providing clear vision all over the Slopes.

There is one more lens that is worth a look, if you read the above and thought you will wear them all the time whatever the weather. There is a goggle lens for you. The Transitional lenses from sinner and Scott are perfect. They are a reactive lens to become light tint when weather is bad and darker when the sun is at its strongest. Perfect for the all-weather skier or snowboarder.

Only then can you choose the look of the goggle. Having said that most of our goggles you can get in a choice of lenses so don’t panic that there not the style you wanted.

Our full selection of ski and snowboard goggles can be found on our website, or at our Blackburn Lancashire Store

How to choose the right down Jacket

Down Insulated

With a wide range of down jacket, choosing the warmest or the most suitable one can be long winded, So let’s take a look at what you need to look for to find out which one is best for you.

Down jackets are fantastic as they will generally last 3 times longer than synthetic jackets. But the downside to down is that it will lose thermal properties when wet. Therefore they are perfect for when it is a bitterly cold dry day.

Down comes in many different forms and quality of feathers. The easiest is to look at the Fill power of a down jacket. The fill power of a jacket explains how much loft the down has. So the higher the loft the warmer you will be for less weight of down. Therefore if you choose a jacket that has between 500+ – 600+ this is perfect suited for everyday use, keeping warm on way to work etc. If you choose something of 700+ or more then these are more suited to mountain use keeping you warmer at colder temperatures. The Fill power will also show you how much loft is in a jacket so the higher the loft the smaller the jacket will packed down if it need to go into a rucksack or similar. Where as a lower spec although will be warm enough will be big and bulky when packed.

Next you can compare how much weight of down is in the jacket the more you have the warmer you will be. This is easier to compare when you choose a jacket with the same fill power of down to tell which one is warmer.

You can find the full selection of down jackets either on our website or in our Blackburn Lancashire Store.

Why a Synthetic insulated garment

Synthetic Insulated

Synthetic insulation is possibly one of the most versatile pieces of garments you can own. A synthetic jacket is designed to be the alternative or in between a fleece jacket or a Down Jacket. The bonus of this type of garment is that it can get wet and will not cause any harm to the inner filling, whereas a down jacket when wet does not perform. It can be worn as an insulated inner layer beneath your waterproof jacket; It can be worn also over the top of the waterproof jacket when you stop for lunch as an insulated layer. Allot of climbers use this time of jacket as they perform better than a Down jacket or fleece when in alpine or mountain conditions.

What to look for: If you look at the higher specification jacket that use a Primaloft insulation, these jackets are designed to be used and a abused. The inner fibres are designed not to break down easily, especially when stuffing them and taking them out of a rucksack constantly. A cheaper non branded equivalent although will keep you as warm, will break down quicker, but is perfect for wearing as a general walker or keeping warm camping etc.

You can find our range of Synthetic insulated jacket for Mens here  or our Ladies Range

Waterproof Jackets and what to look for.

There are many types of waterproof jackets and fabrics to confuse you, here we will try and help in describing the difference and the benefits of them. First you will need to decide what level of waterproof jacket you will need, Are you using it just as a town jacket, or are you on top of the highest peaks in the worst of the weather.

Most Brands will have their own waterproof fabric, for example The North face has Hy-vent, Berghaus have AQ [Aquafoil] and Sprayway have HydroDry. All of these Jackets are fully waterproof, Taped Seams, Windproof and breathable. In the short term and general wear will have no noticeable difference to a higher priced Gore-tex Jackets.

Gore-Tex Jackets will more beneficial because they use a Laminate technique to create the waterproof fabric; this is regarded as a more durable and better waterproof performance over a longer period of time and on a windy day with driving rain. The durability of the jackets will be higher as well.

There are 2 terms used on all waterproof jackets that we will make you aware of. 2 Layers and 3 Layers. A 2 Layer waterproof Jacket will have a mesh drop lining inside the jacket. This creates better breathability when walking, and also a better moisture control system. A 3 Layer Waterproof Jacket is when the mesh is bonded to the outer layer, creating a much more durable fabric and generally provides a better jacket for Backpacking, Mountaineering and Climbing
