A camper van canopy is designed for speed, allowing you to create a porch area in minutes. However, because they are open-sided, they require some know-how to handle the elements effectively.

Dealing with the Wind

Because a van canopy acts like a giant sail, securing it is vital. If you are wondering how to secure a canopy in high wind, the secret lies in the tension. Use heavy-duty tie-down kits and ensure your guy lines are at a 45-degree angle. If the wind really picks up, take it down. It’s better to spend five minutes packing away than spend more money replacing a ripped rail or snapped pole.

Van Canopy FAQs

What is the best canopy for camping?

For van owners, the "best" is usually a model that fits your specific rail height, whether low or tall. Inflatable air canopies are often the most stable in gusty conditions.

How do I attach a canopy to my van?

Most use a Kador strip that slides into a C-channel or multirail. If you don't have a rail, check out our fixing kits for magnetic or pole-and-clamp options.

Are canopies waterproof?

Yes, most modern van canopies feature a high Hydrostatic Head (HH) rating. To protect the waterproof layer, shop our tent care range. A common pain point is water pooling on the roof; the trick is to set one pole slightly lower than the other to create a natural runoff.
