Are waterproof jackets really waterproof?

There are two types of waterproof jackets to be aware of: 2 layers and 3 layers. A 2-layer waterproof jacket will have a mesh drop lining inside the jacket, creating better breathability when walking and a better moisture control system. A 3-layer waterproof jacket is when the mesh is bonded to the outer layer, creating a much more durable fabric and generally providing a better jacket for backpacking, mountaineering and climbing.

HH stands for Hydrostatic Head and is measured in millimetres. It relates to how much water pressure a waterproof jacket can withstand before water penetrates it. The higher the number, the more water pressure the jacket can take. 

Up to 5,000mm is best for light rain.

5,000mm - 10,000mm for moderate to heavy rain.

10,000mm and above is best for very heavy rain.
