A high-quality self-inflating bed is arguably the most efficient way to ensure a warm, comfortable night on uneven ground, bridging the gap between heavy airbeds and thin foam roll mats.

Self-Inflating Sleeping Mat Technical Features

Foam Insulation: The core of a self-inflating mattress uses open-cell foam, which expands to draw in air. This creates a thick barrier that traps your body heat and prevents the cold ground from sapping your core temperature.
Durable Outer Shells: Look for tough ripstop polyester bases that resist punctures from rough terrain, paired with soft, brushed microfibre tops to stop your sleeping bag from sliding around during the night.

Choosing the Right Self-Inflating Mat

For family campers and basecamps: A 10cm to 15cm thick double self-inflating mattress offers the ultimate luxury, providing outstanding insulation and back support that rivals your mattress at home.
For backpackers and hikers: The best self-inflating mattress for camping on the trail is a lightweight, tapered mat (typically 3cm to 5cm thick) that rolls down small enough to strap securely to your rucksack.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do self-inflating mats work?

When you open the valve, the compressed foam core naturally expands, sucking air into the mat. You usually just need to blow a couple of breaths into the valve at the end to achieve your preferred firmness.

How to deflate a self-inflating mattress?

Open the valve and fold the mat in half to force the bulk of the air out. Close the valve, unroll the mat flat, and then tightly roll it from the bottom towards the valve end, opening the valve at the very last second to expel the remaining trapped air.

How to repair a punctured self-inflating mat?

Most quality mats come with a repair kit. To find the leak, wipe the fully inflated mat with soapy water and look for bubbles. Once located, dry the area, apply the provided adhesive, and press the patch firmly over the hole.
