Choosing the right sleeping bag comes down to understanding your specific environment and the technical specifications required to keep you comfortable and safe.

Sleeping Bag Technical Features & Materials

Insulation Type: We offer both down and synthetic sleeping bags. Down provides an unbeatable warmth-to-weight ratio and high fill power, ideal for carrying in a rucksack. Synthetic insulation is bulkier but retains its ability to keep you warm even if the bag gets damp.
Temperature Ratings: Always check the comfort rating rather than the extreme rating. The comfort rating tells you the lowest temperature at which you will have a standard, comfortable night's sleep.
Two-Way Zips: To prevent zips snagging or breaking in the middle of the night, look for bags with robust, two-way anti-snag zips.

Choosing the Right Sleeping Bag

For weekend campers: A synthetic 2-season or 3-season bag offers excellent value and durability for standard British spring to autumn weather.
For mountain expeditions: Opt for a high fill-power down mummy bag. The tapered shape reduces dead air space, keeping you significantly warmer while saving critical pack weight.

Practical Maintenance Tip

To prolong the life of your kit, never store your sleeping bag tightly packed in its stuff sack. Instead, store it uncompressed in a large cotton storage sack or hanging in a wardrobe to maintain the loft of the insulation over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to wash a sleeping bag?

Use a specialist technical cleaner (like Nikwax Down Wash Direct or Tech Wash) rather than standard household detergents, which can strip away water-repellent coatings and damage the fill. Wash on a gentle, low-heat cycle and air dry thoroughly, or tumble dry on a cool setting with tennis balls to restore loft.

What tog sleeping bag do I need?

Unlike duvets, sleeping bags are typically measured in seasons (1 to 5) rather than togs. A 1-season bag is strictly for hot summer nights, a 2-season for late spring to early autumn, a 3-season for early spring to late autumn, and a 4-season or 5-season for winter temperatures below freezing.

Do I need a sleeping bag for camping?

Yes, a sleeping bag is essential for camping. Tents offer shelter from wind and rain, but very little insulation. Even on mild days, the ground temperature drops significantly at night, making a proper sleep system crucial for safety and comfort.
