When it comes to long days on the fells, your boots are only as good as what is inside them. Swapping the flat factory footbeds for dedicated walking boot insoles is the best way to customise the fit for ultimate comfort and support.

Key Features to Consider:

Arch Support: Crucial for distributing weight evenly. Rigid support aligns your foot, reducing strain on your knees and lower back during long ascents.
Memory Foam vs Gel Insoles: Gel insoles excel at heavy impact absorption on hard, rocky paths, while memory foam adapts to the unique shape of your foot for friction-free comfort.
Insole Volume: High-volume insoles take up more space and suit roomy winter walking boots, whereas low-volume options are better suited for snug approach shoes.

Choosing the Right Insole

For hikers with flat feet, structured arch support insoles are essential to prevent overpronation and blistering. If you are tackling multi-day treks carrying a heavy rucksack, prioritise gel-based shock absorption in the heel to protect your joints during steep descents. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need insoles for walking boots?

While walking boots come with standard footbeds, they are often very basic. Upgrading provides targeted support and shock absorption, vastly improving your long-distance comfort.

How to trim insoles?

Remove the original footbed from your boot and lay it flat over the new insole. Trace the toe outline with a pen, then carefully cut along the line with sharp scissors for a tailored fit.
