When choosing the perfect pair of women's outdoor shorts, you need a pair that provides enough coverage to prevent chafing, alongside enough breathability to keep you cool during a steep summer ascent. Standard high-street shorts simply aren't built for the hills, which is why our technical collection is curated to solve common on-trail problems.

Women’s Hiking Shorts Key Features to Consider:

Anti-Chafe Designs: The best anti-chafe hiking shorts for women feature slightly longer inseams to provide excellent thigh protection and prevent the fabric from riding up as you walk.
Stretch Fabrics: Woven with elastane (2-way and 4-way stretch), find shorts that will move with you as you navigate awkward stiles or scramble up steep, rocky banks.
Secure Storage: Women's walking shorts with pockets are essential on the trail. Look for low-profile, zipped pockets that keep your phone and keys safe without adding unnecessary bulk.
Moisture Management: Synthetic materials like nylon and polyester actively wick sweat away from the skin and dry incredibly fast if you get caught in a sudden summer shower.

Choosing the Right Shorts for Your Hike:

For Fast-Paced Summer Walks: Choose lightweight, minimalist walking shorts that prioritise maximum ventilation and rapid drying times.
For Rugged, Multi-Day Treks: Opt for durable, longer-length shorts made from tougher softshell fabrics that offer abrasion resistance against rough rock and brambles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are hiking shorts true to size?

Generally, yes. However, technical outdoor brands often feature a more tailored, athletic cut. If you prefer a looser, more relaxed fit for climbing, or just want extra airflow, you may want to size up.

What length hiking shorts are best?

This depends heavily on your environment and personal comfort. Longer inseams provide better protection against thigh rub and abrasive trail brush like heather. Shorter inseams offer maximum ventilation for very hot, well-cleared paths.
